About this audiobook
In Mrs. Raffles and R. Holmes & Co., John Kendrick Bangs gathers a sparkling sequence of comic tales that parody the late-Victorian cult of criminal ingenuity and detective omniscience. Drawing on E. W. Hornung's gentleman-burglar Raffles and Arthur Conan Doyle's Holmesian method, Bangs relocates sensation fiction into the drawing room, the club, and the absurdities of domestic inheritance. His style is brisk, urbane, and epigrammatic, turning melodrama into social comedy while exposing the formulas by which popular mystery had already become mythology. Bangs was one of America's most prolific humorists, celebrated for his light satirical touch and for the genre later associated with his name, the Bangsian fantasy, in which literary and historical figures mingle in witty afterlives. A New York editor, lecturer, and man of letters, he possessed intimate knowledge of periodical culture and its appetite for sequels, spin-offs, and recognizable types. This background helps explain his affectionate irreverence toward famous fictional lineages. Readers who enjoy classic detective fiction, literary parody, or fin-de-siècle wit will find this collection especially rewarding. It is not merely a spoof, but a shrewd commentary on authorship, celebrity characters, and the comic possibilities hidden inside crime fiction's most solemn conventions.
