About this audiobook

Berta Ruck's *Miss Million's Maid* is a romantic comedy of class, employment, and mistaken identity, organized around the disruptive possibilities created when an ordinary young woman enters the household of a wealthy heiress. Its plot combines domestic detail, social observation, flirtatious intrigue, and the reversals characteristic of popular Edwardian and early twentieth-century fiction. Ruck's brisk narrative voice and dialogue-driven scenes give the novel an accessible charm, while its treatment of servants and employers reveals a period negotiating changing ideas about women's work, marriage, mobility, and respectability. The book belongs to the tradition of light romantic fiction that used the household and the marriage plot to test the rigidity of the British class system. Berta Ruck, born Berta Alice Williams, was a Welsh novelist whose exceptionally prolific career made her one of the best-known writers of popular romance in the early twentieth century. Her experience of modern urban life, her interest in women's professional and emotional choices, and her position within the expanding market for women's fiction shaped stories in which convention is repeatedly challenged by energy, wit, and personal initiative. Ruck's fiction is especially valuable as a record of the desires and anxieties circulating among readers during the transition from Victorian social codes to a more modern culture of consumption and independence. Readers interested in the history of romance, women's popular literature, or representations of domestic service will find *Miss Million's Maid* both entertaining and culturally revealing. It offers the pleasures of comic suspense and emotional transformation while inviting reflection on the social meanings concealed within apparently light fiction. Recommended for anyone seeking an engaging example of how early twentieth-century women novelists made class and gender negotiable through the imaginative freedoms of romance.
