Avevo compiuto da poco tredici anni e mezzo, allorquando fui colpito dal raptus poetico, che mi costrinse a travasare in versi un’emozione fortissima: un giovane studente cecoslovacco, Jan Palach, aveva deciso di imitare i bonzi vietnamiti, dandosi fuoco nella centralissima Piazza San Venceslao di Praga per protestare contro l’occupazione della sua patria da parte delle truppe del Patto di Varsavia, che avevano soffocato il tentativo riformistico di Dubcek, volto a trasformare il regime succube di Mosca in una sorta di socialdemocrazia non oppressiva. Di là dall’inevitabile ingenuità adolescenziale di quei versi, avvertivo l’esigenza di dar voce ai sentimenti che mi si affollavano nell’animo, in modo da superare di slancio il groviglio dei medesimi, da cui si generavano i cavalli di frisia dell’altrimenti inesprimibile. Una volta imboccata quella strada, non mi arrestai e cominciai a sfornare componimenti su tutto ciò che appariva storto nel mondo, dalla fame in Africa al razzismo, senza badar troppo all’estetica. Molto più tardi, avrei raggiunto una maggiore consapevolezza sul modo di veicolare l’urgenza che mi assaliva. Da innamorato della parola, mi resi conto che non potevo far torto alla ricchezza del vocabolario e all’orgoglio di chi si trovi a plasmare la folgore. In questa raccolta, albergano scintille di trent’anni fa e intuizioni molto più recenti. L'unica lezione che penso d’avere veramente compreso è che il più grande nemico della poesia è il famigerato 'poetico', l'uso di termini astrusi e desueti, l'orpello al posto dell'essenziale. I had just turned thirteen and a half when I was struck by a poetic impulse that compelled me to pour a powerful emotion into verse: a young Czechoslovakian student, Jan Palach, had decided to imitate the Vietnamese bonzes, setting himself on fire in Prague's central Wenceslas Square to protest against the occupation of his homeland by Warsaw Pact troops, who had stifled Dubcek's reformist attempt to transform the Moscow-dominated regime into a sort of non-oppressive social democracy. Beyond the inevitable adolescent naivety of those verses, I felt the need to give voice to the feelings that crowded my soul, in order to overcome the tangle of emotions that generated the barricades of the otherwise inexpressible. Once I had embarked on that path, I did not stop and began to churn out compositions on everything that seemed wrong in the world, from hunger in Africa to racism, without paying too much attention to aesthetics. Much later, I would gain a greater awareness of how to convey the urgency that assailed me. As a lover of words, I realised that I could not do injustice to the richness of vocabulary and the pride of those who shape lightning. This collection contains sparks from thirty years ago and much more recent insights. The only lesson I think I have truly understood is that the greatest enemy of poetry is the infamous “poetic”, the use of abstruse and obsolete terms, embellishment instead of the essential.
