About this audiobook
What does it take to spend more than four decades at the centre of a nation's public life? The story of Lee Hsien Loong is a journey through education, military service, personal loss, politics, leadership and the extraordinary transformation of Singapore. Born in 1952 when Singapore was still a British colony, Lee grew up during the years when the island moved through self-government, merger with Malaysia and independence. His life unfolded alongside these dramatic changes, eventually leading him to become Singapore's third Prime Minister and one of the country's most prominent political figures.
This biography takes readers back to the young Lee Hsien Loong before he became a household name. A gifted student with a passion for mathematics, science and technology, he studied at Cambridge University, where he graduated as Senior Wrangler in the Mathematics Tripos and earned a Diploma in Computer Science with Distinction. Yet his future was not originally centred on politics. Instead, he entered the Singapore Armed Forces, embarking on a thirteen-year military career that eventually took him to the rank of Brigadier-General. His years as a soldier developed his experience in leadership, planning, organisation and national defence.
Behind this impressive professional journey was also a deeply personal story. Lee experienced the devastating loss of his first wife, Dr Wong Ming Yang, in 1982, leaving him with two young children. Three years later, he married Ho Ching as he entered a new chapter of both family life and public service. These experiences reveal a side of Lee that is easily overlooked when viewing him only through the lens of political office.
In 1984, Lee made the dramatic transition from soldier to politician. From his first election to Parliament, he moved through ministerial responsibilities, became Deputy Prime Minister in 1990, served as Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore and Minister for Finance, and eventually succeeded Goh Chok Tong as Prime Minister in August 2004. His nearly twenty years as Prime Minister brought challenges ranging from economic restructuring and demographic ageing to technological change, international strategic competition and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The book follows this remarkable period through initiatives such as SkillsFuture and Smart Nation, while also examining Singapore's changing political, economic and social landscape. It explores the pressures facing a small, globally connected nation as technology, demographics, international relations and public expectations continued to evolve.
But Lee Hsien Loong was more than a Prime Minister. Away from government, he enjoyed reading, photography, walking, classical music and computer programming. His decision to share a Sudoku solver he had written in C++ offered an unusual glimpse of the individual behind the public office.
After almost twenty years as Prime Minister, Lee stepped down in May 2024 and became Senior Minister, beginning another chapter in a public career that continued into the post-premiership years.
Lee Hsien Loong is an accessible biography of a man whose life crossed generations of Singaporean history. From schoolboy to scholar, soldier to politician, Deputy Prime Minister to Prime Minister, and eventually Senior Minister, his story invites readers to discover the many chapters behind one of Singapore's most recognisable names—and to see how one person's life can unfold alongside the story of an entire nation.
