In 1873, Chicago businessman and devoted Christian Horatio G. Spafford endured devastating loss. After the death of his young son and the destruction of much of his fortune in the Great Chicago Fire, he sent his wife, Anna, and their four daughters to Europe. Their ship, the Ville du Havre, collided with another vessel in the Atlantic. All four daughters were lost. Anna survived and sent Horatio a telegram: “Saved alone.”
As Horatio crossed the Atlantic to join his grieving wife, his ship passed near the place where his daughters had perished. Out of unimaginable sorrow came words of extraordinary faith: “It is well with my soul.”
This is the remarkable true story behind one of the world’s best-loved hymns—a story of grief, faith, suffering, hope and redemption, and a message of comfort that continues to speak to generations.
