About this audiobook
Irene Iddesleigh (1897) is a late-Victorian melodrama of coerced marriage, illicit devotion, jealousy, confinement, and fatal moral retribution. Its heroine, loving Oscar Otwell yet bound to Sir John Dunfern, moves through a plot of letters, revelations, and domestic tyranny familiar from sensation fiction and sentimental romance. Ros transforms these conventions through extravagantly figurative, alliterative, Latinate prose, making the novel an extreme example of fin-de-siècle ornate style and an inadvertent challenge to realist restraint. Amanda McKittrick Ros, born in County Down in 1860 and trained as a teacher, entered authorship outside metropolitan literary institutions; Irene Iddesleigh was reportedly financed by her husband as an anniversary gift. Her provincial Protestant milieu, moral earnestness, and appetite for high rhetoric helped produce a fiction at once devout, theatrical, and fiercely self-assured. Long ridiculed as bad writing, Ros now also invites study as a woman writer negotiating taste, class, print culture, and the policing of literary legitimacy. Readers should approach this book not for psychological realism but for its singular performance: a romance whose excesses illuminate Victorian melodrama from the inside. It is recommended to scholars and adventurous general readers interested in gender, style, reception history, camp aesthetics, and the unstable boundary between literary failure and extraordinary originality.
