About this audiobook

First published in 1905 as Lieutenant Gullivar Jones: His Vacation, Gulliver of Mars is a formative work of planetary romance, blending late-Victorian adventure, fairy-tale wonder, and proto-science-fictional speculation. Its discontented American soldier is carried to Mars, where he encounters fragile civilizations, ritualized courts, strange landscapes, and the captivating Princess Heru. Arnold's prose is ornate, ironic, and episodic, closer to romance and satire than technological futurism, yet the novel anticipates the interplanetary adventures later made famous by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Edwin Lester Arnold, son of the poet and journalist Sir Edwin Arnold, was steeped in the literary culture of empire, travel writing, classical fantasy, and historical romance. His earlier The Wonderful Adventures of Phra the Phoenician had already shown his fascination with displaced heroes moving through immense spans of time and culture. Gulliver of Mars reflects these interests, recasting imperial adventure as an encounter with an alien but recognizably human world. This book is recommended to readers interested in the genealogy of science fiction, especially those tracing the path from Victorian romance to pulp adventure. It rewards attention not as hard science but as an imaginative bridge between fantasy, satire, and modern space opera.
