Faced with an impossible cut, he and coach Ray Whitfield make the thirty-eight-minute decision to move up to the 189-pound division, a bracket Danny has no preparation for. Fighting on nine years of accumulated base work rather than specific tournament preparation, Danny wins two pool matches, defeats the technically dominant Grant Holloway in the semi-finals by reading the gap in his controlled ride, and faces relentless senior Carlos Medina in the final. With grip-fatigued hands and one period of deficit, Danny executes a last-moment takedown to win 5-3 and claim the state championship in a weight class he entered that same morning.
