About this audiobook

In "George Morland: Sixteen Examples in Colour of the Artist's Work," E. D. Cuming presents a richly illustrated exploration of the life and oeuvre of George Morland, a pivotal yet often overlooked figure in British art history. With a focus on sixteen vivid reproductions of Morland's notable works, this study combines art critique with biographical context, illuminating the painter's strong associations with rural landscapes and animal subjects. Cuming's meticulous prose and insightful analysis contextualize Morland's aesthetic within the tumultuous socio-economic climate of late 18th and early 19th century England, positioning his work as a reflection of both the Romantic movement and the burgeoning appreciation of pastoral beauty in an industrializing world. E. D. Cuming, a scholar deeply invested in the exploration of lesser-known British artists, draws upon extensive research to uncover the intricacies of Morland's artistic journey. His own background in art history and critical theory informs Cuming's analytical lens, revealing how Morland's tumultuous life—characterized by personal challenges and artistic ambition—shaped his distinctive style and contributions to the genre of realism. This book is an essential read for art historians, students, and enthusiasts alike, offering a compelling gateway to understanding Morland's significance in British art. Cuming's engaging narrative not only serves to educate but also encourages a re-evaluation of Morland's legacy, making it a valuable addition to any art lover's library.
