Epistle of Barnabas
An Early Christian Treatise on Allegorical Exegesis, Apocalyptic Expectation, and the Post-Apostolic Struggle for Covenant IdentityBy Anonymous

About this audiobook
The *Epistle of Barnabas* is an early Christian treatise that interprets Israel's Scriptures through an explicitly Christological and allegorical lens. Rather than offering conventional correspondence, it combines polemic, scriptural exegesis, ethical instruction, and exhortation: its author argues that Christians constitute the true people of God, reads Jewish rituals and commandments as spiritual signs, and concludes with the contrasting "Two Ways" of life and death. Its forceful rhetoric, dense typology, and confident appeals to prophetic fulfillment place it within the diverse literary world of second-century Christianity, while its form reveals the fluid boundaries between epistle, homily, and theological tract. The work is especially valuable for studying early Christian identity formation and interpretive strategies. The author remains anonymous, and the traditional attribution to Barnabas—the companion of Paul—cannot be established from the text. Internal evidence generally situates the work after the destruction of the Temple and probably in the late first or early second century, amid debates over the relationship between emerging Christianity and Judaism. The writer's extensive use of the Septuagint, vivid polemic, and concern to instruct a Christian community suggest a teacher addressing believers who needed both doctrinal reassurance and moral discipline. Its early circulation, including a place in Codex Sinaiticus, demonstrates its historical importance, even though it was not ultimately received into the New Testament canon. This challenging but rewarding book is recommended to readers interested in patristics, biblical interpretation, early Christian theology, and the social formation of religious communities. It should be read critically, with attention to its polemical context, yet its imaginative exegesis and ethical urgency make it an indispensable witness to Christianity's formative centuries.
