This volume will reward readers of Texas history, western studies, Indigenous-borderlands scholarship, and folklore. It is especially valuable when read critically, alongside Native perspectives and modern historical research, but its firsthand atmosphere and wealth of otherwise elusive testimony make it an indispensable source for understanding how Southwest Texas remembered its formative frontier decades.
