About this audiobook

Claimed gathers the strange energies of early twentieth-century speculative fiction into a work of uncanny maritime mystery, occult suggestion, and proto–science fiction imagination. Moving between adventure narrative, psychological suspense, and supernatural romance, it explores possession, desire, antiquity, and the perilous allure of unknown forces. Its atmosphere of storm, sea, and buried myth situates it within the vibrant pulp tradition while also revealing a striking literary sophistication. Gertrude Barrows Bennett, writing as Francis Stevens, occupies a crucial place in the development of American weird fiction and is often recognized as one of the first major women writers of modern fantasy and science fiction. Her work anticipates later traditions of cosmic horror, lost-world romance, and dark fantasy, while remaining rooted in the magazine culture that shaped popular speculative literature. The dual name associated with this volume underscores both authorial ingenuity and the gendered constraints of the publishing world. Readers interested in the genealogy of fantasy, horror, and science fiction will find Claimed a rewarding and revealing text. It offers not only a compelling tale of mystery and supernatural menace, but also a valuable encounter with a formative voice whose imaginative reach helped expand the possibilities of genre fiction.
