E’ il 1944 quando Gian Dàuli scrive Cabala bianca, uno dei libri più inusuali della narrativa italiana del Novecento. Concepito come una scatola cinese, questo romanzo racconta le giornate di un uomo qualunque che confonde la vita reale con il mondo dei sogni, senza rispettare il naturale alternarsi del sonno e della veglia, mescolando le proprie esperienze notturne e diurne. Lo circondano personaggi come la moglie Clementina e l’amico Piero, che rivestono i ruoli di vittime o carnefici in maniera ambigua, ma anche figure dall’esistenza incerta, come l’amante Gabriella e il figlio Bernabo, che appaiono e scompaiono come impalpabili ombre e luci. Si succedono cosi coup de théâtre, mentre nella sua odissea personale il narratore sfugge da un incubo per cadere in un altro, scavando nell’inconscio e mettendo in scena una sequenza di immagini dalle atmosfere pirandelliane. Un libro raro, geniale come il suo autore, un vero gioiello della nostra letteratura.
