Haunted by the emptiness and injustice of the colonial project, he finds his only real companionship with the Indian Dr. Veraswami, an enlightened soul whose friendship is a scandal in the eyes of his peers. But when the corrupt and Machiavellian magistrate U Po Kyin sets in motion a devious plot to destroy the doctor, Flory is forced to confront his own moral cowardice.
Salvation seems to arrive in the form of Elizabeth Lackersteen, a newly arrived English girl whose fresh beauty ignites in Flory a desperate hope for love and redemption. As he vies for her affection, he becomes entangled in a battle against U Po Kyin's scheming—a struggle that pits the truth of his conscience against the unwritten laws of the Raj. The result is a powerful and tragic story of loyalty and betrayal, and a blistering, timeless indictment of the corruption and bigotry at the heart of imperialism.
