G.A. Henty's historic novel "Bonnie Prince Charlie" describes the adventures of the son of a Scotch officer in the French service. The young lad is brought up by a Glasgow bailie (a civic officer in the local government of Scotland). Eventually he is arrested for aiding a Jacobite agent. However, he escapes, is shipwrecked on the French coast, reaches Paris, and serves with the French army at Dettingen. He kills his father's enemy in a duel, and escapes to the coast where he shares the adventures of Prince Charlie, and finally settles happily in Scotland.
