The title comes from Black Bottom and Paradise Valley, two historic Detroit neighborhoods that once formed one of the most successful Black business districts in America. More than 227 Black-owned businesses thrived there, creating jobs, wealth, culture, and opportunity despite segregation and systemic discrimination. Then, during the 1950s and 1960s, urban renewal erased it all. More than 40,000 Black residents were displaced as Interstate 375 was built directly through the heart of the community.
Today, most people drive that highway without realizing what once stood beneath it.
This novel begins with that history—but it looks toward the future.
Set in Detroit in the year Black Bottom Rising* imagines a city determined to reclaim its economic destiny.
