The book follows the adventures of David Innes and Professor Abner Perry after they use an experimental drilling vehicle, called the Iron Mole, to burrow 500 miles into the Earth's crust. They end up uncovering a subterranean world, named Pellucidar, inhabited by prehistoric creatures and primitive humans. Captured by the cruel Mahar, they have to navigate this savage world and find a way to overthrow the Mahars in order to find their way back home.
