Ashes of the Beacon: An Historical Monograph Written in 4930 (Unabridged) (Annotated)
Enriched Edition. A Future History of Democracy's Collapse and American Political SatireBy Ambrose Bierce

About this audiobook
Presented as a remote future historian's monograph, Ashes of the Beacon imagines the United States from the vantage point of the year 4930, after its democratic "beacon" has burned out. Bierce adopts the dry apparatus of historical scholarship—archival confidence, ironic distance, and explanatory footnotes in spirit—to produce a devastating political satire. Its speculative frame places it among fin-de-siècle anti-utopian writings, yet its style is unmistakably Biercean: compressed, caustic, epigrammatic, and animated by distrust of cant, mass sentiment, and patriotic myth. Ambrose Bierce, Civil War veteran, journalist, short-story writer, and lexicographer of The Devil's Dictionary, brought to this work a lifetime of skepticism toward institutions and public rhetoric. His battlefield experience sharpened his sense of human cruelty, while his newspaper career trained him to expose euphemism and corruption. The monograph's future perspective reflects Bierce's habit of stripping contemporary America of its self-congratulating language to reveal political decay beneath. This unabridged edition is recommended to readers of political satire, American literary pessimism, and early speculative fiction. Brief but intellectually bracing, it rewards those who appreciate irony as historical method and prophecy as moral diagnosis.
