She treated the wounded under fire, operated in makeshift hospitals, survived typhoid fever, and crossed enemy lines to care for civilians abandoned by advancing troops.
Captured by Boer forces and imprisoned, she endured disease, hunger, and hardship before being exchanged at the war’s end.
