About this audiobook
"Absolution" is among F. Scott Fitzgerald's most revealing short fictions, a psychologically acute tale of Catholic guilt, youthful self-invention, and the perilous glamour of imagined identities. Centered on Rudolph Miller, a sensitive boy whose secret inner life strains against religious discipline and middle-class constraint, the story employs Fitzgerald's characteristic lyrical precision and moral ambiguity. Often described as a discarded or transformed beginning for The Great Gatsby, it illuminates the spiritual prehistory of Fitzgerald's great theme: the American longing to become someone else. Fitzgerald, born in 1896 to an Irish Catholic family in St. Paul, Minnesota, repeatedly drew upon his own divided inheritance: provincial respectability, romantic aspiration, social exclusion, and a fascination with wealth's theatrical surfaces. His Jesuit schooling and early religious impressions inform the story's confessional atmosphere, while his mature awareness of illusion and performance anticipates Jay Gatsby's self-created myth. "Absolution" thus stands at the intersection of autobiography, theology, and modernist experimentation. This work is recommended to readers who wish to see Fitzgerald refining the imaginative materials that would culminate in The Great Gatsby. Brief yet resonant, it rewards close attention to symbolism, voice, and moral tension, offering an indispensable glimpse into the making of one of American literature's central visions.
